September 2003.
Expressive life of Made K. Bendesa is like a storytelling
just as his brush strokes of oil paint or acrylic on canvases are.
The combination of contrast and bold colours becomes the characteristic
style of this young painter who was born in Bali. He owned a studio
where his paintings are exhibited and the interior of this studio
takes a minimalist modern concept that illustrates the artworks
as complementing elements in the space.
The Beauty of nature and the unique culture of
Balinese society becomes the sources of inspiration in his painting.
Detail of object such a sunset scene in Kuta to the dynamism of
kecak dancers movements can be seen transpired on his canvases.
The playful bright colours, contrasting effect
and boldness on the brush strokes is strong and firm in presenting
the ideas and thinking with perfect balance. The combination of
colours is spill out in simple form of layered lines, composition
of geometrical squares or circles thus yields to a livelier feel
of the painting.
Most of the object painted by Made has reference
at some point to his past personal experiences including the event
that is still in the publicity nowadays, namely the bomb blast.
Each painting has meaning and message to it and also a wealth of
philosophy to its creation. For example, his youthful memory of
playing with a horse is expressed in a form of series of lines with
composed abstract Square and the use of bright colours.
In order to come up with an expensive result, made
experimented with various techniques to yield his own characteristic
in his brush strokes, colour blocks and powdered golden accent technique.
He also tried various methods and tools from hand strokes to using
brushes, rollers, spoons, spray and even crumpled papers to result
in a more textures to his painting.
The works that Made has produced most are large
scale measuring 4 x 1,5 metres which hi finishes in 5 to 7 days
work. As a self-taught artist , Made studied literature and famous
painter from abroad and locals, therefore his quality of strokes
of acrylic and oil paint is always evolving and shows a depth character.
Because he needed a special place to exhibit his
paintings, Made built a gallery of his own that applied minimalist
modern touches in the interior to complement the character of his
paintings. He characteristically bold colours are applied onto the
wall in the interior spaces as well; hence it blends with his artworks
and creates a unified concept.
He applies black and dark purple colours onto various
walls on the studio space to enhance the appearance of bright coloured
artworks. These paintings are perfect for interior homes and office
space that apply a minimalist modern style, as these paintings can
become accentuation in an interior with antique style or ethnic
furniture to give the room elegance and pride.
